Biographical or Historical Information

The worshiping community of El Mesias began meeting at the Waco Avenue UMC (possibly in the late 1990s).  "El Mesias" (The Messiah) was chosen as the name for the Waco Avenue church. The name was adopted during the 2000 Charge Conference. At that time, Hispanic Ministry Coordinator Rev. Sergio Tristan said that "El Mesias" was a familiar name for Methodist churches in Mexico and would bring name recognition among Wichita's Hispanic community. In 2004, the Kansas West Annual Conference designated El Mesias a mission church. In spite of the assistance of conference fundng, the former Waco Avenue building fell into disrepair; the conference committee and board of trustees agreed that it was beyond repair, and the El Mesias community began searching for a new home. In 2008, St. Paul's UMC, Wichita, and the El Mesias community agreed to share a facility and some ministries. El Mesias was closed effective December 31, 2018.
