Biographical or Historical Information

Prairie Chapel was founded in 1904 as a United Brethren congregation. The original church building, constructed in 1905, was destroyed by a tornado shortly after construction and was soon rebuilt. In 1925 Prairie Chapel became a Methodist Church. The chapel was struck by lightning and the subsequent fire destroyed the building in the late 1930s. A basement structure was built to replace it. An upper structure made of brick was built in the early 1950s and was dedicated on the church's 50th anniversary. Prairie Chapel's 100th anniversary was celebrated on September 26, 2004.(Our Church History, Prairie Chapel UMC, 2004) The membership voted on April 12, 2015 to discontinue the church. The Great Plains Annual Conference declared the church discontinued as of June 30, 2015. Undesignated memberships were tranferred to Oberlin United Methodist Church.(Great Plains Conference Journal, Resolutions, 2015)
