"WINDOM METHODIST CHURCH, Written for May 21, 1961. "At the time the Church was being considered, our little town was named Laura. We must thank a dear lady named Mrs. Case, who saw fit that Windom and the surrounding community should have a religious meeting place. She called a meeting at a school house south of Windom and urged everyone to come to help organize a place to worship. This plan worked fine, but in a few years as the Sunday School and Church grew, they obtained a hall in Windom to meet. Still more interest arose and they could see a need for a Church building. This dream came true and the first Church was built on this site in 1886 -- 75 years ago now at the cost of $500.00. "Many of the followers were of the Methodist faith, so it was called the Methodist Episcopal Church. Now the need for a minister arose. Rev. M. DeMott came to serve this church on May 3, 1886. The official board members were installed as follows -- Stephen Gilpen, S. A. Drummond, John F. Floyd, Robert Merch, and Fred P. Holt. "In a short time a Ladies Aid, Junior League and Epworth League were organized. These became real strong groups spiritually in our church. The Ladies Aid is still active and Mrs. Lillie Myers is the only living Charter member. "During the past seventy five years this Methodist church has served the community in its spiritual needs, as a social unit for all, and as a training school for the youth. It has had many of life's joys and sorrows within its walls. May the next seventy five years see its continued growth and its spiritual influence be felt for generations to come. "Lillie and George Myers are the oldest living members of our church. George Myers is 86 years of age. Lillie Myers is 81 years of age."
