Biographical or Historical Information

There is very little information included in the file on the history of the Achilles church. From a letter included in the collection, it appears that the first mention of the church is in the 1886 minutes of the Northwest Kansas Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, where it is found in the appointment list. The 1936 conference report indicates that it was moved and carried "that the Achilles Church in the Colby District be listed for sale and that it be sold at the discretion of the District Superintendent and the District Board of Church Location." The 1947 minutes of the Central Kansas Conference, Methodist Church, recorded that the church and lot were sold to the Swedish Mission for $200. The exact date of the church's closing is not known as of this writing (2018), but it is possible that some of the members transferred to churches in nearby towns such as Atwood, Kansas.
