Biographical or Historical Information
John Dew was born July 17, 1789 in Virginia. He died September 5, 1840 in Illionis. He was married to Lucy Dew. John served on trial in the Ohio Conference and was sent to the Salt River Circuit in Kentucky in 1812. He then served in the Tennesse Conference in Hoolston in 1816. In 1823, he served in the Missouri Conference in the Illinois Circuit. After the formation of the Illinois Conference, he was transferred to the Missouri Conference in 1825 where he was appointed presiding elder of the Missouri District for one year before being transferred to Saint Louis. In 1827, John was transferred back to the Illinois Conference and appointed superintendent of the Potawatomie at Salem. He planted a church in Salena in 1825. John then was sent to Lebanon in 1829. Then in 1830, he traveled the Shual Creek Circuit with Edward R. Ames. He was then sent back to Lebanon and from there he was sent to Kaskaskia. In 1836 he was appointed President of McKendree College for one year. John was then appointed presiding elder of the Carlisle District and the Lebanon District. He died September 5, 1840.
