He attended rural schools as well as the Atchison County Community High School, graduating in May, 1943. He then served in the U.S. Navy as an AETM3 (Aviation Electronics Technician’s Mate Petty Officer Third Class) for three years during World War II. After the war, he attended the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas, graduating in 1948. He returned to KU for an additional degree in science and education, after which he taught in Caldwell and Manhattan. While writing his thesis on the relationship between science and religion, he discerned a call to the ministry, and entered Perkins School of Theology, graduating in 1958. He married Emily Laverne Patton on July 8, 1956; their daughter, Sarah Margaret, was born on December 8, 1963. During their marriage, he and his wife traveled extensively to all 50 states and 50 countries on five continents. During his ministry, Rev. While at Baxter Springs UMC, he earned another degree, a masters in psychology and counseling. In June 1990, Rev. Amend and his wife retired to Caldwell, Kansas, where he volunteered in local organizations and served as a supply pastor to churches on many occasions. Rev. Amend died on March 9, 2008, at the age of 82. His funeral service was held at Caldwell United Methodist Church and he was buried in Caldwell City Cemetery in Caldwell, Sumner County, Kansas. His wife passed away in 2014 and is buried at his side. His memoir can be found in the Kansas East Conference Journal for 2008, page 391.
