Christian Stewardship, or Systematic Beneficence Manuscript
Scope and Contents
There is one item in this collection: a single bound journal containing a handwritten manuscript for a book titled Christian Stewardship, or Systematic Beneficence. The author is unknown. A note on the front inside flap states the following: "I take the liberty of saying to the writer of this xxx that it was one of three most [honorably?] considered by the adjudicators and will, I doubt not, have [hopeful?] chance of the increased prize if [revised?]." The note is signed by an A. Stevens and dated 1854; this could be History of Methodism author Abel Stevens. A book published in 1856, titled Systematic Beneficence: Three Prize Essays was the result of a contest adjudicated by the Tract Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Abel Stevens took the top prize in that contest, received $300 for his essay, and saw it published in the 1856 book along with the other two winners. It is possible, but not certain, that the manuscript in this collection was another entry in this contest.
