Biographical or Historical Information

Robert Horton Adams was born in Decatur, Texas, on July 12, 1930, to D. W. and Opal Adams. The family later moved to the Wichita area and lived there during the WWII years, where the young Adams attended high school in the Planeview area, newly built for the influx of aircraft workers. After graduation and marriage, he attended Friends University while working at Boeing and beginning to raise his young family. He received his B.A. from Friends in 1955 and began preaching at a small Free Methodist church in Arkansas City, an experience he described as "discouraging." After a break from preaching, he felt a renewal of his call and began preaching at Grandview Methodist Church near Winfield, Kansas (1959-1960). He was then appointed to the Lyona church (Junction City, Kan.) and entered seminary (St. Paul School of Theology) in 1961. Rev. Adams was admitted to the Central Kansas Conference on trial in 1961. He was ordained deacon on May 28, 1961, and admitted into full membership and ordained elder in May, 1963. After his appointment to the Lyona church in 1960, he also served at the Prairie Chapel church in Jennings before transferring to the Nebraska Conference on June 1, 1967. Rev. Adams was married to Evelyn Irene Gossard on May 12, 1951. Their children are: - Richard Randall Adams (born December 1, 1951) - Roger Dale Adams (born May 14, 1953) - Rex Wayne Adams (born November 20, 1954) - Rodney Gene Adams (born February 15, 1960) Rev. Adams died November 25, 1988, in Florida. His memoir can be found in the Nebraska Conference Journal for 1989, page 371.
