Scope and Contents
Folder 1 contains a letter (May 13, 1991) from "Joanne Black, Archivist" to Randall Loflin of Wichita, Kansas, containing several suggestions for Mr. Loflin who was researching the life of Elijah B. Abbott. The letter refers to a list of references from the Conference journals including memoirs for some of Elijah Abbott's family members. (This list is not included as an enclosure with the letter.)

Biographical or Historical Information
Elijah Brown Abbott was born in Indiana on February 12, 1834. In 1850, he is listed in the census as living in Tate, Clermont County, Ohio, with his father, mother, two brothers, and two sisters.
He married Martha Sarah Joslin (1834-1904) on September 11, 1855, at her home near Felicity, Clermont County, Ohio. Their children were:
- Mary E Abbott (1856-1860)
- Minerva Jane Abbott Carr (1858-1897)
- Malissa Easter Abbott (1861-1929)
- Edward Abbott (1864-1911)
- Mahala Mayme Abbott (1873-1898)
In 1860 he was living in Felicity, Clermont County, Ohio, with his wife and two oldest daughters; he listed his occupation as "Chairmaker."
It appears that Abbott served in the Union Army in 1865 (see below).
After the war, the family moved to Illinois in 1867 and to Butler County, Kansas, in 1873, settling five miles west of Augusta. In 1880 he is shown as living in Gore, Sumner County, Kansas, with his wife and three children; at that time his occupation was listed as "M. E. Minister."

The adult daughter of Rev. Abbott and his wife, Minerva Jane (Abbott) Carr, died October 21, 1897; her memoir can be found in the Southwest Kansas Conference Journal for 1898, page 99.
Their daugher Mayme died in 1898; her memoir can be found in the Southwest Kansas Conference Journal for 1899, page 150.
In the 1890 census he was in Bruno, Butler County, Kansas, with his wife; at that time he was listed as a farmer. His wife died in 1904; her memoir can be found in Southwest Kansas Conference Journal for 1904, page 258.
On August 25, 1907, he married Mary C. Hutchenson in Sedgwick County, Kansas. (No children were reported from this marriage.)
He died on June 8, 1920, and is buried in Leavenworth National Cemetery by virtue of his service during the civil war:
19 January - 20 September 1865 as a Private in Company I, 184th Ohio Infantry.
