Biographical or Historical Information

Leslie Earl “Les” Andrews was born January 2, 1924, in Sedalia, Missouri, the son of Milton Paul and Lydia Allen Newberry Andrews. His educational credentials include: Central College, McPherson, Kansas; McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas (B.A.); Greenville College, Illinois (A.B.), received Th.M. at Iliff in Denver, Colorado. He married (Theresa) Lucille Mendenhall (b. December 25, 1924) on June 24, 1943, in McPherson, Kansas. Their children were Marjorie Lois Orr (born November 27, 1944); Michael Paul Andrews (b. June 23, 1946); David Leslie Andrews (b. May 31, 1948; died March 19, 1964); and Joseph Earl Andrews (born June 24, 1950). Early in his ministerial career (probably in the late 1940s or early 1950s), Rev. Andrews wrote, “My membership is in the Free Methodist Church, where I have held a Local Preacher’s License for 8 years. I am pastor [...] through an agreement with the local congregation and with the unwritten approval of the district superintendent.” He was received on trial 1952; ordained deacon 1955, ordained elder 1957; served Medicine Lodge, LaCrosse, Wichita Mt. Vernon, WaKeeney, Prairie Home, Kanorado, Ruleton, McCracken, Lenora, Bethany UMC (Wichita) (1982-1990) (retired June 1, 1990, after 41 years of ministry). Appointment/salary sheet gives this history: 1950, 1951 – Lenora 1952-1954 – McCracken 1955-1957 – Kanarodo-Ruleton Celebrated 50th wedding anniversary at Mt. Vernon UMC (Wichita) in 1993. In describing him in an online tribute, one of his grandchildren said he was “a poet, a songwriter, and sang with a Barber Shop Quartet…. After he retired, he continued working, ministering to everyone he encountered with his non-failing love for Christ. Even as his memory diminished, hymns and scriptures flowed from him like they did 30 years ago. His eyes came back to life when he could sing praises to the Lord. To the end, he was truly devoted.” Rev. Andrews died on January 29, 2008, at the age of 84. He was buried at Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Wichita, Kansas.
